Camp Emerald is a music & empowerment summer camp for queer, trans, gender-variant and gender non-conforming youth. At this week-long day program, campers ages 13 – 20 years old can learn a new instrument, form a band, and attend workshops on music, relationships, queer history, self-defense, screen-printing, and much more. No music experience necessary!

Camp Emerald is organized by the Queer & Trans Youth Music Project, and staffed by volunteer instrument instructors, band coaches & managers, workshop facilitators, and more. Campers can expect to meet other queer, trans, gender-variant, gender non-conforming folks of all ages, as we build community together during the week. The camp culminates in a final showcase at the Vera Project, where camper bands perform their original song for a room of cheering fans, family, and friends old and new.

2019 instrument choices:

  • Electric Guitar
  • Electric Bass
  • Drums
  • Electronic Instruments (Keyboards, Synthesizers, Samplers, etc)
  • DJ/Turntables
  • Vocals (Singing or Rapping concentration available)

Logistics:

  • Date, Time, and Location

Camp is held August 5th-9th, 2019 from 9am-5pm with the camper showcase being held on August 10th, 2019 at 7:30pm (campers arrive at 12pm for dress rehearsal, closing ceremony, and dinner). The 2019 location is The Vera Project on the corner of Warren and Republican street in Seattle Center.

  • Tuition

The estimated cost for each camper to attend Camp Emerald is $500. This includes renting space for camp, breakfast and lunch every day, transportation & housing (when applicable), equipment to use throughout the week and at the showcase, workshop supplies, coordinator stipends, and general operating costs.

It is our priority to make camp accessible to everyone, and no one will be turned away for lack of funds! We ask campers and families to make a donation towards the $500 tuition cost that is meaningful and substantial to you. We also encourage campers and families with more resources to consider making an additional tax-deductible donation to help us ensure that campers with very limited resources are able to attend Camp Emerald at low or no cost.

If you are accepted to camp, you will be mailed a tuition donation form along with your other paperwork. Your answer to this section is not binding, and does not affect your acceptance to camp, but it will help us plan our fundraising needs.

  • Housing and transportation

Youth from all over are invited to come to Camp Emerald! We arrange host families for out-of-town campers, usually with in-town campers and families! Please let us know if you need housing during camp, or if you are interested in learning more about hosting campers in your home.

Transportation and carpools to and from camp will be arranged for any campers who do not have a ride otherwise.

  • Food

We have an amazing and dedicated kitchen staff providing delicious foods catering to all dietary restrictions for breakfast and lunch every day. And if campers ever need a snack or a cool place to hang out, they can join us in the kitchen! Let us know your food needs in your application!
